Introduction
If you are thinking of taking a course at an Irish college or university you may have to demonstrate that you have the English language skills to cope with academic study. Most institutions will expect you to have an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6 before you take up a place on a course.
The test score you require will vary from institution to institution and course to course. As a guide, you will be expected to have achieved a minimum average score of 6. The more advanced the course the higher the test score required by the institution. Some colleges will not only want to know your average score, but also how well you have done in each part of the test. The course you choose may have a heavy writing requirement and if your writing score in the test is not high enough the college may refuse you entry to the course.
The course at Grafton College is designed to prepare you for the IELTS academic test and at the same time give you the language skills to undertake formal studies at Irish Colleges and Universities.
For more information about IELTS please go to www.ielts.org
An additional 2-4 hours of self-study per day is recommended. However, your teacher will assist you with any homework and assess your written work according to test standards, if required.
